Changing Settings in Windows Explorer

It will be beneficial to you to become familiar with Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and browsing your directory tree.  Windows Explorer is a file navigation utility that is packaged with the operating system.  It allows you to see a graphical representation of the file and folder structure of the hard drive on your computer.  This utility makes it simple to rearrange, reorganize, copy, paste and delete files and folders.  It is a useful tool that you will use once you start creating your web site.

  • Right click on the “Start” button, Explore

  • Change the settings so you can see the hidden and system files on your computer.  Windows prevents you from seeing these files so you don’t accidentally erase important system files.  But to see all the files and folders in your web site, we need to enable this function.  (Do this on your computer at home or work, too)

    • Click on Tools > Folder Options> View Tab >

    • Click on Show Hidden Files radio button

    • Uncheck the box Hide File Extensions for Known File Types.

    • Uncheck the box  Hide Protected Operating System Files.

  • Click OK

Browse to My Documents, then to My Webs.

Examine the file structure of an existing web site.  A web site is nothing more than a collection of files and folders written in a special language called HTML or Hypertext Markup Language.  The folders contain designing information about page formatting.   Notice the grayed-out folders.  These are hidden folders, and would not be visible if we had not changed the settings in Windows Explorer.

You will also see the three letter file extensions now, like .htm and .ini in the picture below.  As you work with FrontPage you will learn what these different file types are.  HTM files are web pages, JPG, GIF, and PNG files are graphics files and pictures, for example.

Get the Details

Learn to use the Details View in Windows Explorer.  Music, pictures, graphics, and video clips can be quite large, and will take a long time to download.  The are changes we can make, like converting a WAV file to MP3, or re-sampling a JPG file to make it smaller, so it will load more quickly.
