Adding Content to Your Home Page

We are not going to focus too much on what to put on your home page as much as the mechanics of adding text to your site.  You will have a homework assignment that includes reading Secrets of Writing a Business Website Homepage by Joel Walsh.  For the sake of brevity here, your home page should be the web equivalent of the dust jacket on a book, providing just enough information to get the reader to open the book and read further, and perhaps purchase the book.  Your home page should entice and lead people deeper into your site.  It should give people an answer to the questions "why do I want to stay on this web site" and "what is this web site all about?"

Entering Text

Entering text on your web site is no different than in Microsoft Word, and the formatting controls are identical in most cases to those you are hopefully already familiar with in Word.

You have two ways to add text:

  • Typing.  If you do not have text that you can borrow from existing sales literature or advertising, just go ahead and tell your story in a narrative style.

  • Using Cut or Copy and Paste.  These functions are found in the Edit menu or on the Standard ToolbarIf you already have information about your company or organization in a Word document or a marketing piece in some other type of file format, there is a good chance you can just copy and  paste text from the documents into your web site.  Bring these sorts of documents with you when you come to class for the next session.  If you prefer you can use the dummy text sample I have provided at the bottom of the page.

Tip:  A useful keyboard shortcut for this is:  Ctrl + X to cut, Ctrl + C to copy, and Ctrl + V to paste.  This will work even when the commands are grayed out, or not available on the menu.  I think of a scissors (X) for cut, and an arrow (V or insert here) for paste.  C for copy is hopefully obvious enough.

  • When you paste text into your web site, FrontPage will pop up a little Clipboard icon.  Clicking on the arrow will display available options.  They generally are:

    • Use Destination Styles - this will convert the font, size, and formatting to the styles used in your web.

    • Keep Source Formatting - this will keep the font and text size of the source.

    • Keep Text Only - This will remove all formatting, and bring in straight text in the font style of your web site.

Formatting Text

Text formatting functions can be found in the Format menu or are arrayed on the Formatting Toolbar, as shown above.  Most of these you are probably familiar with, but I want to take a moment to discuss the Style command at the left end of the toolbar.

When we looked at customizing your Theme, you may have noticed the different text formats that were built in to the theme.  If not, take a look at them now, by clicking on the arrow at the right side of the Style box.

As you can see, there are automatic styles for 6 headings, for bullet lists, for address blocks, and more.  Using styles will save you the time and effort of bolding and increasing font size for section titles and other common elements.

To apply a style to text

  • Select the text or paragraph that you want to apply a style to.

  • On the Formatting toolbar, in the Style box , click the built-in or user-defined  character or paragraph style you want.

    • A character style is a combination of any of the character-formatting options that are identified by a style name. Character styles are shown in the Style box by a small, underlined letter a in front of the style name. Use character styles when you select part, but not all, of a paragraph.

    • Only one built-in character style is installed with Microsoft FrontPage (shown in the Style box as Default Character Style and preceded by a small, underlined letter a). The Default Character Style removes formatting applied by user-defined character styles.

    • A paragraph style is a combination of character- and paragraph-formatting characteristics that are named and stored as a set. You can select a paragraph and use the style to apply all of the formatting characteristics to the paragraph at one time. Paragraph styles are identified by a paragraph symbol (for built-in styles) or the absence of a character or symbol (for user-defined styles) in front of the style name.

A heading style applies larger font sizes, bolding, and italicizing automatically.  Use headings instead of manually formatting fonts for section titles.  Search engines index headings and use them for providing page ranking for your site.  We will learn much more about this on Day Four.  For now, just be sure to use headings where appropriate.

Dummy Text

You may want to copy and paste some dummy text into your practice site to see how other design elements work around the text.  I have included some "lorem ipsum" dummy text for you to use during the class.  You can copy it off the page below or open it as a Word document by clicking on the link.  Or you can go to http://www.lipsum.com/ and generate some for yourself.
