Creating a Back and Next Link Bar

Before we get into the Custom Link Bar lets look at the second option.  You can create a Back and Next Link Bar by selecting the option from the Insert Web Component dialog shown below.  This option forces your visitors on a guided tour through your web site, without the option of browsing.  The process is identical to the what is described below.  The order you place the pages in the list determines what is back and what is next.

Hands on Practice - Creating Custom Link Bars for your Web Site

When you add a custom link bar, you can link to any of the pages within your Web site, as well as to external pages, other web sites, or e-mail addresses. You can set the link bar up in any way that you want, you can add back and next links, and you can add and remove pages from it at any time.

  • Click Insert, NavigationThe Insert Web Component dialog box opens, with Link Bars, and Bar with Custom Links pre selected.  Click on Next.

  • Choose a Theme.  You can use the Page's Theme, or scroll down to find a link bar from a different theme that you like better.  Then click on Next.

  • Choose a page orientation.  For our site we will choose vertical and click on Finish.

  • The Link Bar Properties dialog box opens.  Select Create new... and name the link bar Left Link Bar, then click on OK.

  • Click on the Add link button and create your first link.

  • Go ahead and add all the pages of your web site to the link bar.

Modifying Your link Bar

  • You can add another link, delete a link, or modify an existing link, as well as move the links up or down in position form this dialog box.  You can also automatically add the Home Page and the Parent Page by checking the selection box.  When it is time to make changes to your link bar, you can open this dialog box by right clicking on the link bar and selecting Link Bar Properties from the context menu.

  • You can also go back and change the theme and orientation of the link bar by clicking on the Style tab.

  • Your web site should now look something like the illustration below.  The horizontal link bar in the Page Header area was created by FrontPage and is based on the navigation structure of the site.
