Copying Your Web Site

It is possible to use the Publish feature to place a copy of your web site on another computer.  If you hope to work on the web site from your own computer, you will need to do this.  The process is outlined below.  Follow the steps and illustrations, and you will now have 3 copies, one at the computer lab, one on the Internet, and one at home.  Once this class is over, you will have just two, the local copy on your personal computer, and the remote copy on the web server.

How to Copy Your Site From The Web To Your PC

  • First, if you haven't already done so, install your copy of FrontPage.  See the instruction on the Homework 1 page.

  • Click on File, Open Site.

  • The Open Site dialog will open like the illustration below.

  • Click on the New Folder icon.

  • Type the name of your web site into the New Folder dialog, then click OK.

  • A new web folder will be created, and FrontPage will open the folder.  you will see in the Look in: box at the top the name of the new folder.

  • Click on Open.

  • The first time you publish your site to a new location, FrontPage will add special files and folders to the site so Front Page server Extensions will work correctly.  Answer Yes to this dialog.

Now we will open the Remote Web Site.

  • Click on File, Publish Site.

  • Type in the address of your web site, http://www.xxx.wyzguys.net, where xxx is replaced with your assigned number.  Click on OK.

  • When the Password dialog opens, enter your assigned user ID and password.

  • Your Remote Web Site will open in the right hand pane.

  • Click on the Remote to local radio button.  The blue direction arrows will appear in the right hand pane.

  • Click on the Publish Web Site button.  The green progress bar will move across the bottom of the Publish window.

  • Your web site content will now appear in the left hand Local Web site pane.

  • To edit your site, simply click on the index.htm or any other page in the left hand Local Web pane, and work normally.

  • When you are ready to publish your changes again, click on File, Publish.

  • IMPORTANT!  Change the radio button back to Local to remote, then click on the Publish Web site button.

You now have successfully moved your web site from the server to your personal computer.

For the duration of the class, if you work on your site at home, you will need to remember to publish all your changes before coming to class, and fetch the changes from the web to the computer in the lab so you can work in class.
