Inserting a Table

The quick and painless way to create a table is from the Insert Table icon on the Standard toolbar.  Click on the Insert Table icon, and select the number of rows and columns from the drop down box by dragging across the columns and rows you need.

Table Properties

  • If you want to get into more specific options for your table, click on Table, Insert, Table from the Table menu.

  • You can set the properties— for example, height, width, border size, and background color— of tables by using the Insert Table dialog box. The dialog box provides the following options.

  • Once you have created a table you can reopen the dialog by highlighting the entire table, right clicking, and selecting Table Properties from the context menu.

  • To change options for a single cell, a row, or a column, right click and choose Cell Properties.

Note  Depending on your authoring settings, some of these options might be unavailable.

Layout Tools

  • Enable layout tools   Turns on tools for viewing and changing the dimensions of cells, columns, and rows in the table, as well as the table itself. You can change these dimensions by using both precise measurements, in pixels, and relative measurements that adjust the size of columns and rows to the size of the Web browser window. The layout tools appear when you click a table or cell border in Design view.

  • Disable layout tools   Turns off layout tools for the table.

  • Automatically enable layout tools based on table content   Turns the layout tools on or off for the table automatically, depending on whether the table primarily contains data or primarily organizes page elements as part of a Web page design.

Size

  • Rows   Enter the number of rows you want to include in the table. If you increase the number of rows in an existing table, Microsoft FrontPage adds the additional rows to the end of the table. You cannot decrease the number of rows in an existing table by using the Rows box.

  • Columns   Enter the number of columns you want to include in the table. If you increase the number of columns in an existing table, FrontPage adds the additional columns to the right of the rightmost column in the table. You cannot decrease the number of columns in an existing table by using the Columns box.

Layout

  • Alignment   Changes the position of the table in the Web page. In the Alignment box, click the alignment you want, Flush left, Centered, or Flush Right.

  • Float   Changes the way text and other elements in the Web page flow around the table, if the table is not as wide as the Web page. In the Float box, click the float setting you want.

  • Cell padding   Enter the amount of space, in pixels, you want between the contents and inside borders of cells in the table. You cannot set the cell padding for an individual cell in the table.

  • Cell spacing   Enter the amount of space, in pixels, you want between cells in the table. You cannot set the cell spacing for an individual cell in the table.

  • Specify width   Sets the width of the table to a value you specify. You can specify the width in pixels or as a percentage of the width of the Web browser window. In the Specify width box, type a number for the width you want, and then click In pixels or In percent to indicate the unit of measurement.

If you chose pixels, the table size will be fixed and will not dynamically resize.  If you choose percent, your table will automatically expand or contract depending on the monitor size and resolution settings of your visitor.

  • Specify height   Sets the height of the table to a value you specify. You can specify the height in pixels or as a percentage of the height of the Web browser window. In the Specify height box, type a number for the height you want, and then click In pixels or In percent to indicate the unit of measurement.

  • Table direction   Sets the direction of text and other elements in the table. This option is available only if you have enabled support for multiple languages in FrontPage.

Borders

  • Size   Enter the width, in pixels, you want for the table border.

  • Color   Changes the color of the table border and the borders of cells in the table. If you apply a light border or a dark border to the table, this color doesn't appear. In the Color box, click the color you want.

  • Collapse table border   Renders the borders of cells in the table as a single line instead of a pair of lines with space between them.

  • Light border   Changes the color of the left and top borders of the table and the right and bottom borders of cells in the table. By applying light and dark colors to these borders, you can create a three-dimensional effect for the table. In the Light border box, click the color you want.

  • Dark border   Changes the color of the right and bottom borders of the table and the left and top borders of cells in the table. By applying light and dark colors to these borders, you can create a three-dimensional effect for the table. In the Dark border box, click the color you want.

Background

  • Color   Changes the background color of the table. In the Color box, click the color you want.

  • Use background picture   Adds a graphic to the background of the table. In the box, type the path and file name of the graphic file, or click Browse to locate the file.

  • Browse   Click to select the file for the graphic you want to add as a background for the table.

  • Properties   Click to change the format and other settings for the background graphic of the table. This option is available only if you already added the background graphic to the table.

Set

  • Set as default for new tables   Automatically applies the current layout, border, and background color settings to new tables.

  • Style   Click to create or change inline styles for the table.
