About Web Components in FrontPage

A Web component, sometimes called a WebBot, is a dynamic object on a Web page that is evaluated and executed when a page is saved or, in some cases, opened in a Web browser. The Date and Time component and the Table of Contents for This Web Site component are examples of FrontPage Web components.

By using Web Components in Microsoft FrontPage, you can add a wide variety of features to your Web site, ranging from hit counters that register the number of visitors to a page, to photo galleries that display a collection of graphics.

You can choose from two types of Web components: author-time components or browse-time components.

Author-time components are tools that can make it easier to create and design Web pages. They are available in FrontPage. If you want to add an author-time component to your site — such as a photo gallery or link bar — you do not need to install specific software or a specific server technology on the Web server that hosts your site.

Browse-time components are available on Web sites located on Web servers running FrontPage Server Extensions from Microsoft, SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft, or Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services.

This content is available by typing Web Components into the search box in FrontPage help.

You can insert many different Web components in Microsoft FrontPage by using the Insert Web Component dialog box. (Insert, Web Component) The dialog box provides options for the following items:

Dynamic Effects

  • Marquee  Makes text scroll horizontally across the screen.

  • Interactive Button  Inserts a graphical button that contains text. The button changes when a site visitor points to it.

Web Search

This tool allows visitors to search your web site.  An Internet web search tool is provided below under MSN Components.

  • Current Web  Inserts a search form that searches the contents of the active Web site. This component requires FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from Microsoft or SharePoint Team Services v1.0 from Microsoft.

  • Full-Text Search  Enables a full-text search of your Web site. This component requires Windows SharePoint Services. Full-text search must be enabled on the server.

Spreadsheets and Charts (Office Web Components)

You can add interactive spreadsheets, charts, graphs, and PivotTable lists to your Web pages by using the Microsoft Office Web Components. The Office Web Components are Microsoft ActiveX controls that display data from a workbook, database, or other data source that you specify. When the data in that data source changes, the component displays those changes. This helps to ensure that you and your site visitors can view and interact with data that is up to date.

The Office Web Components include the following:

  • Office Spreadsheet  This component displays data in an interactive spreadsheet.

  • Office Chart  This component displays data in an interactive chart.

  • Office PivotTable  This component displays data in an interactive PivotTable list.

By default, site visitors can both view and interact with data in any type of Office Web Component. However, you can specify protection settings for a component. These settings determine whether site visitors can only view the data in the component, or can both view and interact with that data.

Read more about Using and supporting Office Web Components in FrontPage.

Hit Counter

Hit counters has fallen from common usage by most web developers, as more accurate visitor information is available from the web hosting company.  If you still want to include one, this is how it is done.  Each Hit Counter option inserts a hit counter that tallies and displays the number of times the page has been visited. Choose from the following color combinations:

  • Gold digits on black background.

  • Black digits on white background, comic style font.

  • Orange digits on black background.

  • Black digits on white background, block style font.

  • Green digits on black background.
